[singlepic id=44 w=135 h=96 float=left]This is a topic that I feel quite strongly about, having done article marketing for quite a while in my short Internet Marketing career. See what I did just there? I hooked you in with a personal link, as well as throwing in some emotion. I lured you in immediately by writing to you, the reader. If the Google robot read that, they’d simply skim over it, unaware that here was an Internet Marketing having a deep and meaningful moment with his readers.
Writing for SEO and writing for readers are both important aspects of the Internet Marketing game and it has long been debated which is more effective and useful in the long run. This article will compare the pros and cons of both writing for the search engines and writing for readers. Keep in mind that it is simply another opinion. At the end of the article, you should be able to decide yourself which type of article is more important.
Writing for SEO – Advantages
The advantage of writing for SEO is obvious: the articles are more likely to get ranked higher in the search engines. Given that the keyword you are ranking for is a low-competition, medium-high search volume keyword, this translates to potentially hundreds of dollars for you.
It’s extremely useful, especially for checking the competition and ease of ranking for a keyword. If you’ve written an article for a certain keyword and it ranks relatively high in Google, this means the keyword is easy to optimise for, meaning it’s worth putting some effort into ranking your website for it (if you have one).
Writing for SEO – Disadvantages
Writing for SEO is definitely an art, an acquired skill if you like that takes months, if not years of training and patience. A lot of the problems with trying to rank for keywords or key phrases is a lot of the keywords that you try ranking for don’t exactly flow in written form.
Some common examples of these are misspelt keywords, and random chunks of sentences that supposedly people type in every day into Google. If you’re selling second-hand tires, this might mean trying to rank for, “to buy second-hand tires”. Not an easy phrase to work into an article once, let alone working it into the article three to five times to exploit the
“rankability” of the keyword/phrase.
Writing for Readers – Advantages
I am a major advocate of writing for readers. I’m practising writing for readers as you’re reading this. Every single word that you’re reading, every single word that’s flowing out of my mind, through my arms, dripping out of my fingertips and splashing onto the keyboard, I’m writing for you.
Can you see what I like about writing for you? It allows me to be very creative. This creativity will draw you, the reader in and increase my chance of having you come back to read more of my work or, better yet, physically trying to find me on the Internet by typing my name into search engines, say. I’m allowed to write like how I talk so this mean, like, I can talk to you on a more personal level, you know what I’m saying (see what I just did in that sentence)?
Writing for readers is simply more natural and I wouldn’t be able to write as fast as I could if I wasn’t writing for human eyes. The fact of the situation is there are going to be grammatical and maybe even spelling errors when I write for readers, but you know what? The trade off is worth it if means that I can sell you more stuff since I’m more believable because I can relate to you.
Writing for Readers – Disadvantages
Just like any medium, writing for readers has the added disadvantage of driving away people from your articles or your website. If you have an annoying style of writing, or if not many people enjoy your sense of humour or if you’ve upset someone with your careless comments left on their blog that was meant as constructive criticism, writing for readers might make it
hard for you to make money online by article marketing.
Since there also so many people writing in their own personal style, you’re just another drop in the ocean. No matter how unique you think you are, unless you’re really “out there”, no one’s going to pay attention to you or even notice you in the first place.
It’s up to you really, what you deem is more important to you in the long run. A lot of people find that they are happy to write for the search engines, since it will allow them to check for keywords that they can rank for. Other people might find that writing for search engines is unnatural and prefer to write how they talk, developing a relationship with readers
who like their style of communication.
I personally write for readers. Who do you write for?
